Historia de la Producción de Café en Finca Don Lenco
La siguiente información sobre la perspectiva histórica y cómo surge la producción de café en la Familia Del Cid y en Finca Don Lenco fue recopilada de una entrevista realizada al Señor Isaac Del Cid, hijo de Lorenzo Del Cid (Don Lenco).
En 1930 emigra de Boquete hacia Volcán, Lorenzo Del Cid Quiróz, con tan solo 20 años de edad en busca de trabajo; Empezó trabajando con su cuñado Juventino García, oriundos de España, juntos trabajaban la ganadería en Silla de Pando, Nueva California. Y a la vez en Los Pozos y en Tizingal cultivaban café.
Al cabo de unos años ocurrió un incendio accidental en una de las fincas colindantes en Los Pozos que afectó mucho los cultivos de café del Señor García.
Posteriormente a eso, Lorenzo buscó la independencia y se fue a vivir a Bambito, donde adquirió una finca y rápidamente se estableció y consiguió trabajo con el Señor Ramiro Guerra en Alto La Amenaza en las labores de siembra y recolección de café (A 25 centavos le pagaban cada lata de café con aproximadamente de 20 a 30 libras).
Por las tardes luego de su trabajo, se dedicaba a cultivar y mantener árboles frutales en su casa como: mandarinas, naranjas, peras y manzanas criollas, chirimoyas, frambuesas, entre otras frutas, que utilizaban él y su esposa Tomasa Jiménez para el consumo propio.
Años después conoció a dos suizos llamados Roberto Müller y Alfredo Waser, pero al cabo de unos años Müller murió y Alfredo, siendo el administrador, quedó con la propiedad y con ánimos de vender; Lorenzo decidió adquirir el inmueble para producir café en Piedra de Candela.
Empezó a cultivar café por su cuenta y unos años después trajo consigo a uno de sus hermanos menores, Daniel que vivía en Boquete, para que le ayudara en las labores.
Años después, Lorenzo dividió la finca con su hermano y vendió su parte; ya que se le dificultaba viajar desde Bambito hasta Piedra de Candela.
En 1945 adquirió una finca de 30 hectáreas en lo que actualmente se conoce como Alto Tribaldos al Señor Ignacio Espinoza, ahí empezó con un novillo, y luego compró una vaca y en poco tiempo tenía una pequeña lechería, aprovechando los pastizales, caminaban alrededor de 8 kilómetros diarios por un trillo antes del Hotel Bambito, que era la única vía de acceso para llegar al mencionado Alto, en ese entonces.
Tiempo después, un señor llamado Olmedo Martínez abrió caminos extrayendo madera, y como a Martínez solo le interesaba la madera, no se quedó por el área ni con terrenos. Los señores Santos Guerra y Delfín Guerra, que vivían cerca, fueron las primeras personas que adquirieron terrenos en lo que hoy se conoce como Alto Los Guerra, luego le ofrecieron a Lorenzo que también tomara terrenos y poco a poco fue tomando experiencia para trabajar la horticultura, por ende decidió adquirir una parcela de 25 hectáreas, cuenta su hijo Isaac, que sembraban papas y repollos (corazón de buey).
En el año 1952 adquirió otra finca en Alto La Amenaza donde sembraba, lechugas, repollos, zanahorias y bajaban dos cajas hasta el pueblo, amarradas a una yegua; un año después su colindante, el Señor Irene González, con ánimos de buscar nuevos horizontes le vendió su finca, quedando así una sola parcela de 50 hectáreas aproximadamente.
Lorenzo siguió con las labores del café, y su Hijo Isaac, ya con 17 años, le ayudaba con la lechería, las hortalizas y los cafetales.
Don Lenco, como le decían de cariño sus amistades, se encargaba cosechar las bayas de café maduras, despulparlas, lavarlas y de dispersarlas en los bastidores, un mes después llevaba esto a Boquete y se lo vendía a Café Ruiz.
Pasaron años y fue entonces cuando hubo una crisis cafetalera en el país y sus Hijos Isaac, Daniel y Humberto decidieron dejar de lado la caficultura y dedicarse solamente a las legumbres y al ganado.
En 2010, Juan Del Cid, nieto de Don Lenco, decide retomar las labores del abuelo y siembra tres lotes en una superficie de 7 hectáreas denominados Finca Don Lenco, que es una parte de Finca Del Cid, con cuatro variedades de café, entre ellas Catuai, Caturra, Typica y Geisha.
Ocho años después y con varias zafras hasta la fecha, se tiene una producción existente, que se comercializa de manera tradicional (es decir en producto fresco o cerezas). Con muchos ánimos de seguir el legado que inició Don Lenco y de transmitirlo a las generaciones venideras.
