El Volcán del que nadie habla en Chiriquí
Si bien el Volcán Barú es el más famoso del país, en Tierras Altas existe otro volcán del que nadie habla (o casi nadie). Se trata del Volcán Tisingal
Fácilmente localizable a través de mapas satelitales, el Volcán Tisingal alberga dentro de su cráter a los pozos termales de Tisingal y a los pozos termales de Cotito. Dentro de su geografía también se encuentran alojamientos de montaña renombrados como Mount Totuma y Cotito Lodge.
El Volcán Tisingal se encuentra junto a la frontera con Costa Rica en la Cordillera de Talamanca, en el extremo occidental de Panamá, al Noroeste del Volcán Barú. Se trata de un gran estratovolcán andesítico-dacítico que se abrió paso hacia el suroeste, dejando una caldera en forma de herradura de 7 km de ancho que abarca hasta Cotito. El Cerro Picacho, en el borde Noreste de la caldera, constituye el punto más alto del volcán, de 2,986 m, y es el quinto punto más alto de todo Panamá.
Dos grandes domos de lava, el andesítico Cerro Totuma y el dacítico Cerro Pelón, se formaron en los lados Noroeste y Este, respectivamente dentro de la caldera. Otros dos domos, el mayor de los cuales es el Cerro Pando, se encuentran fuera de la caldera hacia el Suroeste, y otro domo, el Cerro Punta, está al este de la caldera. La datación potasio-argón (método de datación radiométrica que surgió en la década de 1960 y que se utiliza en geología y arqueología para datar rocas o cenizas volcánicas) para el complejo del Volcán Tisingal oscila entre 1,66 millones de años y 0,52 millones de años.
¿Pero el nombre Tisingal, de dónde viene?
Con respecto al nombre de Tisingal, el naturalista alemán Alexander Von Frantzius (1882) indica que este vocablo se ha escrito también como Tinsingal, Tiusigal, Tissingal, lo que puede estar haciendo referencia a Tegucigalpa, conocida en la época como Tafuzgalpa o tierra de oro.
Las leyendas sobre la existencia de las minas del Tisingal, provienen directamente de los primeros conquistadores españoles, y perduran hasta el siglo XIX, cuando se hacen por lo menos una decena de expediciones en busca de las minas de oro, culminando con un serio intento de colonización y explotación de Talamanca. Investigaciones geológicas rechazan la idea de la existencia de grandes minas en Talamanca.
Hoy día, algunos dicen que en la finca de Palo Santo, donde están los petroglifos, es donde se encontraba la bocamina. Sin embargo, esto no ha sido confirmado y no se ha encontrado dicha mina.
Mediante diferentes estudios, se ha demostrado que el volcán de Tisingal se encuentra extinto o inactivo.
